What is a Goldenmax FR-4 Copper Clad laminate?
A Goldenmax FR-4 Copper Clad laminate is a high-quality, fire-resistant PCB material manufactured by Goldenmax Cooperation.
An FR-4 CCL laminate is a PCB laminate constructed using a proprietary GDM process.
Specifically, it consists of a substrate or base reinforcing material, FR-4, and one or two copper sheets pasted on either side.
FR-4 copper-clad laminates are the most widely used materials for the construction of PCBs.
FR initials abbreviate ‘Fire Resistant,’ and the number 4 indicates the grade of epoxy resin reinforced with a wooden glass.
Goldenmax FR-4 Copper Clad Laminate
An FR-4 CCL is a fibreglass cloth substrate-based copper clad laminate.
You can modify or brominate the epoxy resin appropriately to meet the adhesive requirements of the laminate.
Standard single- or double-layered Goldenmax FR-4 CCL laminate has a main core constituting FR-4 material and copper layers on top and bottom layers.
However, multi-layered laminates have additional components, layers of prepregs, between the centre core and the copper layers.
The laminate, core, and prepreg may all be FR-4 with a copper sheet inserted between the ground and signal layers.
How Do You Manufacture Goldenmax FR-4 Copper Clad Laminates?
FR-4 material comprises a prepreg sheet manufactured using a mat of fibre.
The fibreglass itself has been impregnated with epoxy resin.
Usually, eight layers of prepreg covered by an outer layer of copper foil make up a standard 1.6mm circuit board.
The bonding of copper foil and the prepreg layers happens when you pass the Stack Up through a large pressing machine.
You will make the copper foil using slowly rotating a steel drum dipped into copper’s plating solution.
The slowly rotating drum deposits electroplated copper on its walls.
You strip the electrodeposited copper as the plated emerges from the solution.
The strength of Goldenmax FR-4 laminate will depend on the toughness of the glass cloth you use.
You can make a glass cloth by weaving the fine fiber yarn strands together.
The yarn themselves comprise very small and twisted glasses.
Another component, the epoxy resin, constitutes a bisphenol-A and an ethylene chlorohydrin.
The resin is usually very strong and can withstand almost anything except for strong oxidizing agents and extremely high temperatures.
How Can You Manufacture a Multilayer Goldenmax PCB?
Multilayer PCBs have been around for some time. These PCBs came in 1961 and were very simple back then.
Today’s multilayer PCBs are very complex and finds use in a very wide range of applications.
Multilayer circuit board technology is necessary for more complex, demanding modern electronic applications such as tablets, 4G/5G smartphones, PCs, CT scans, etc.
Consequently, you have to come up with techniques of fabricating highly effective multilayer PCBs with significantly reduced sizes.
A multilayer PCB has three or more conductive copper layers in the middle and other build layers constituting copper foils and prepregs.
You can consider the following tips when fabricating your multilayer PCB.
- First, make the PCB core.
- Second, Stack Up the core, prepreg, and copper foil layers appropriately and combine them at high pressure and temperature. This process forms one complete laminate.
Heat melts and cures the adhesive system, which holds the different components of a multilayer PCB together.
The pressure is important for removing excess air from the laminate and accelerating the combination of prepreg and copper layers.
- The number of prepregs depends on the operational needs of your system.
- Stack the laminates together, one after another, to the desired layers, then add the final copper to create final lamination stack.
- You need to pass the final laminate through a hydraulic press, which uses pressure and heat as described above. This process is known as curing and allows the adhesive system to melt and hold the core and copper foil together.
- Set the assembly to cool and allow the resin to settle at room temperature to complete the process of making a multilayer PCB.
Though the fabrication of a multilayer PCB process follows a similar process, it needs meticulous planning and attention to detail.
The final output is not only dependent on the process but also the planning and attention to detail.
Consequently, you have to be vigilant when selecting the right manufacturer for your multilayer PCB.
You should consider the technical capabilities, experience, certification for a specific industry, and customization options.
What Quality Standards Does Goldenmax Laminates Meet?
Goldenmax laminates meet the requirements of:
· ISO Standards
ISO9001:2008 and ISO 14001: 2004 certification.
· IPC-4101 Standards
All the fabrication procedures and test protocols for Goldenmax laminates comply with the IPC-4101 standards.
· CCC Standards
Also, Goldenmax laminates are CCC and CQC certified.
Any company in China has to acquire these certificates before they can commercially sell or export their products abroad.
· RoHS Standards
This is yet another important standard when it comes to PCB material fabrication process.
What Factors Determine the Cost of Goldenmax PCB?
Price consideration is critical in designing and manufacturing a PCB.
Understanding the dynamics of PCB prices and fabrication process is fundamental in making a PCB without additional and unnecessary price implications.
Some of the key factors to consider include:
A PCB with a higher number of layers is necessary for performance-demanding applications.
However, the number of PCB layers linearly corresponds to the cost of the PCB.
You will pay more for a higher number of GDM layered PCB.
Multilayer GDM PCB
Number of Plated-Through Holes
You should only use holes on a multilayer PCB when they are necessary.
If you do not have any layout or signal restriction, then plated through holes are not necessary.
The cost increase depending on the size and total number of Plated through holes.
Very thin holes are more difficult to make and will therefore cost you more.
Also, the number of holes is directly proportional to the costs of drilling.
Type of Goldenmax FR-4 Laminate
The cost will also depend on the features of the FR-4 you use.
High Tg FR-4 laminates cost more because they can exhibit superior performance in thermals demanding applications.
Special constructions such as halogen-free and lead-free FR-4 laminates also cost more compared to ordinary FR-4.
GDM PCB fabricated using premium GDM FR-4 material cost more than a PCB constructed with a mix of ordinary FR-4 material.
Type of Surface Treatment
Some types of surface treatments are more expensive than others.
OSP is the cheapest surface treatment, followed by HASL Lead, HASL Lead-Free, Immersion Gold, and Electronic gold being the most expensive.
Also, the thickness of surface treatment will influence the final PCB cost, where thicker treatments increase PCB cost.
The thickness of copper foil used is also an important price determinant.
Usually, the price increase with increasing thickness from 0.5 Oz.
However, a much thinner copper foil, measuring 1/3 Oz. is usually more expensive than 0.5Oz.-copper foil.
Thickness of PCB
Generally, most PCBs have a standard width of 1.6 mm, which is also a referral point in most cases.
Usually, the cheapest Goldenmax PCB is approximately 0.8 mm thick, after which the price increases linearly with increasing thickness.
Size of Board
The bigger the board, the higher the cost.
The high cost is mainly a result of higher quantity of materials required to manufacture the board.
Thinner board sizes are also very expensive because they use high-quality laminates.
Consequently, the price of boards also increases with reducing thickness for boards below 0.8 mm.
Other important parameters which also affect the cost of GDM FR-4 CCL PCB include:
- Minimum trace width or space
- Type of Vias, buried or blinded
- PCB’s impedance control
- Type of Via drill, that is, is it laser or CNC drilled.
- PCB area
- PCB delivery time
Why Have the Prices of Goldenmax Laminates Increased in The Recent Past?
The PCB industry has experienced an increase in the prices of copper-clad laminates in the recent past.
The cost of almost every aspect of CCL production has been surging sharply since the beginning of the pandemic.
The prices of basic raw materials such as copper, oil, and other related costs like labour and transportation have been skyrocketing.
Consequently, the only viable option for the continued survival of Goldenmax Technologies is to increase prices like other semiconductor producing companies.
Even though the risk of losing some potential customers is high, the alternative would be fatal to the company.
Can You Use Goldenmax PCB to Fabricate PCB Prototypes?
Yes, you can use general Tg FR-4 CCL to design a Goldenmax PCB prototype.
What Are the Limitations of FR-4 Copper Clad Laminates?
Even though FR-4 copper-clad laminates are the most widely used PCB materials, they also have some operational shortcomings.
The most notable is electric and thermal properties’ failure when subjected to excess heat, power, and voltage.
Besides, the dielectric properties of the FR-4 CCL laminates break down when you exceed the operational limits.
Consequently, the laminate loses its insulation competency and instead starts conducting electricity.
Another limitation of FR-4 CCL material is its incapability to maintain stable impedance.
This is due to variation in its dielectric constant across the board’s length and width.
How Does Halogen-Free and Lead-Free CCL Compare?
A halogen-free Goldenmax laminate has the recommended quantities of content halogen.
Specifically, bromine and chlorine content in halogen-free PCB has to be below 900ppm for each compound.
Overall, the total halogen content must not exceed 1500 ppm.
On the other hand, a lead-free golden max CCL laminate must comply with the RoHS directives 2002/95/EC.
Consequently, lead-free must comply with the restricted and hazardous compounds’ set limits to be considered lead-free.
The following table compares the performance of halogen-free, lead-free, and ordinary FR-4 CCL.
|Thermal decomposition temperature||310°C||˃320°C||˃320°C|
|Water absorption resistance||Bad||Good||Good|
|T260||10 minutes||˃30 minutes||˃30 minutes|
What Factors Must You Consider When Selecting Goldenmax Laminates?
You should consider the following parameters when selecting the most appropriate Goldenmax laminate to use in your application.
Electrical Properties and Performance
Electrical performance is probably the most important aspect when it comes to selecting the most suitable laminate.
You have to consider individual parameters such as the material’s dielectric constant, dissipation factor, surface and volume resistivity, and electric strength.
Other electrical parameters such as insulation and arc resistance, comparative tracking index, and dielectric breakdown voltage are also fundamental.
Ensure that the electrical features of the laminate you select are in tandem with your system requirements.
When considering a laminate’s physical performance, ensure that you address the Peel strength, punching quality, dimensional stability, heat resistance, and thermal stress.
Physical performance defines the ease with which you can fabricate the laminate and also its ability to withstand the application’s physical stress.
You have to ensure that your laminate has the desirable specifications for resistance to normal use chemical reagents and CAF.
It is equally very important to consider the thermal properties of Goldenmax PCB laminates.
This is because when you miss the most suitable specifications, your laminate will damage when overloaded.
Here, the most relevant properties are Z-axis CTE, In-plane Coefficient of Thermal Expansion, and dimensional stability.
Others of importance also include the transition and decomposition temperatures, flammability rating, among others.
You can select one of the ecologically friendly GDM PCB material.
This depends on the legislative and regulatory needs or just whether you are ethically concerned with environmental wellbeing.
There are different lead-free and halogen-free golden max laminates that are very friendly to the environmental requirements.
You need to check out for the presence of any undesirable defects that may arise from manufacturing, transportation, or storage of the laminate.
Reject any scratched, dented, wrinkled, or any other form of visible damage.
This is because it will affect the performance of your final Goldenmax PCB product
Choose the correct size, core thickness, tolerance, and length and width dimensions.
Consider the diagonal deviations and warpage to ensure that the selected laminate conforms to all the desired PCB specifications.
