How to proceed the ENIG process?
Pre-treatment: removes oxides from the copper surface, at the same time roughening to increase the adhesion of nickel and gold;
Micro-etching: produces a uniform and flat copper surface.The Activation: coating the copper surface with a layer of palladium (Pd) as a catalyst for the deposition reaction, the palladium ions are reduced to palladium metal to adhere to the copper surface;
Nickel plating: prevents the diffusion between copper and gold, forming a solder base;
Immersion gold: prevents oxidation of the nickel layer.
Difference between ENIG pcb & gold plating pcb.
2.1 The gold thickness of ENIG is more than the gold-plating,and ENIG looks yellow than gold-plating because gold-plated plate has the color of nickel.
2.2 Their crystal structure is different. Relatively speaking, ENIG is easier to solder and also ENIG is less resistant to abrasion when doing gold finger, because enig is more flexible.
2.3 Nickel is only used on the pads of the ENIG board, so the signal transmission in the surface finish does not affect the signal of the copper layer. Also the solder resist layer is firmly bonded to the copper layer.
2.4 The crystal structure of ENIG pcb is much denser than gold-plated board, cause it not easy to oxidation.PCB process for more accurate strict requirements, line width and spacing are below 0.1mm.
2.5 The flatness and service life of the ENIG pcb are better than that of the gold-plated board.

Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) surface finish is an extremely flat finish for copper solder pads.
For fine pitch components, such as 0.5mm pitch and smaller BGAs and other ICs, it is important to have a flat pad surface to ensure uniform contact between all contacts and the solder paste.
In contrast the HASL surface finish consists of a thin layer of solder that leaves an uneven rounded curved moon surface at the edge of the pad, which leads to solder defects in fine pitch components.
Defects due to poor pad flatness are difficult to detect and repair, and can lead to poor yields.
