How Do You Manufacture Blank PCB?

The following is a stepwise procedure of manufacturing a blank PCB.

Component analysis and requirement analysis   where the appropriate components according to the requirements are selected such as supply of power.

In system design which entails designing the PCB using software, the design is always in a Gerber file which includes information like copper tracking layers and component notation.

Photo tool initiation that entails doing a DFM check on the design the fabrication of the circuit board starts.

A photo film is then made using the laser printer, the purpose of the film is to help create a figure of a copper path.

Inner layers getting printed, the substrate is cut, cleaned and dried.

Thereafter, copper is bonded on all sides of the substrate which is then coated with a layer photoresist and exposed to UV to harden.

The already formed film is placed on top of the copper and allied using pin positions.

Etching, the panel is the washed with an alkaline solution to eliminate the copper that has not hardened thus leaving the needed copper intact.

Alignment, the different present layers are put into line and punched optically to create registration holes.

At this point, the outer layers should align accurately with the inner layers.

Automated optical inspection, the panel is subjected to inspection before bonding and laminating.

A laser sensor is used by the machine to scan through the layers and compares it with the original Gerber file to eject out possible discrepancies.

Layer up bond, PCB layers are then bonded to one another using plate presses of aluminium.

For multilayer and double PCB, copper films are put on the original layers with insulting layers between them thus the etching process has to repeat.

The layers are then laminated together to achieve the desired shape of the PCB.

Drilling, holes are then drilled into the PCB stack to aid the interconnection of the PCB electronic components.

Drilled holes usually have a diameter of about 100 to 150 microns, however, precision is always keys to the processes of drilling.

Deposition and platting of copper, after drilling, the entire panel surface should covered with a layer of copper to bond the panels.

Also, covering the entire surface with copper covers the nonconductive materials that have been subjected to opening after drilling.

For plating, a chemical electrolysis is set up.

Imaging of the outer layer and etching of copper, photoresist material is applied and imaged, unwanted copper is also removed.

At this stage, the connection of the PCB are now established.

Application of solder mask, the PCB board is then cleaned and application of a solder mask is done.

The function of the solder mask is to prevent oxidation, corrosion and damage of copper.

To remove excess solder mask, it has to be exposed to UV light then oven baked.

Surface finishes, PCB board is then plated using the silver, gold or hot air solder levelling finishes.

Surface finishes have the function of protecting the surface copper.

Silk screening, it is the process that involves the printing information that is critical on the PCB like the component number, company name and manufacturing ID.

The process is important to enable having an easy time during repair and servicing.

Electric test, using probe tests, short and open circuit tests are done to ensure functional reliability of the PCB.

A durability test is also done.

V – Scoring, the PCB is then cut out of the manufactured panel, then cut into specified shapes and sizes depending on given specifications.

V – Cuts are then made on the sides of the board thus enabling them pop out from the panel.

Inspection and packing, quality inspection is then done and test reports are presented to customers for purposes of verification.

Airbag pockets or vacuum sealed bags are used to package to boards in order to prevent physical related damages.
