What Are The Laminate Materials Used In The Manufacture Of Full Turnkey PCB?

High Performance FR4

It boasts of an excellent strength-to-weight ratio with a resistance to flames. It also functions very well under extreme temperatures.

High Tg Epoxy

BT Epoxy

What Requirements Does Full Turnkey PCB Have To Meet Before Applying HASL Surface Finish?

Hot Air Solder Leveling (HASL) is the process of dipping the Full Trunkey PCB inside a solder bath that is melted.

The PCB has to have these requirements:

  1. The solder coating has to be defect free with a smooth surface. Bubbles should not affect the solder mask in any way. The PCB should have a surface free from foreign particles.
  2. A range of 3µm to 8µm should be maintained as the tin layer soldering thickness
  3. Solderability should be maintained by eliminating lead.

What Are The Electrical Methods Used To Test Full Turnkey PCB?

Some of the main testing techniques include:

X-ray Inspection

This inspection is also known as the AXI. It is more of an inspection tool for most Contract Manufacturers.

An X-ray technician is able to detect flaws promptly during this test by viewing the barrels, internal traces and the PCBs solder connections.

Elements that are normally concealed from sight can easily be checked by X-ray testing.

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)

Photos of the PCB are taken either by a two 3D cameras or a single 2D camera. A comparison is then made between the PCBs detailed schematics and its photos from the cameras.

If a schematic doesn’t match the boards photos to a certain degree, then an inspection technician flags the board.

Issues can be detected in advance using AOI to ensure immediate shutdown of production.

However, the board is not powered by the AOI and does not have total coverage of all the part types.

In-circuit Testing / Bed-of-nails Test

This is the most vigorous PCB testing type present. It is very expensive but the cost depends on fixture size, the board among other factors.

The individual board circuitry is powered and actuated by the ICT. This test is usually 85-90% human error-free.

Burn-in Testing

This is a very extreme testing type for PCBs. Its purpose is to notice initial failures and find the load capacity.

The strength of burn-in testing normally destroys the parts being tested on the PCB.

This type of test usually shortens the PCBs lifespan especially if the boards rated stress is exceeded.

The testing limit is reduced if a few or no failures are found after a brief period of time to evade over-stressing of the PCB.

Flying Probe Test

This test option is less expensive compared to in-circuit testing.

What Are The Advanced Capabilities Of High Density Interconnection On Full Turnkey PCB?

When manufacturing, it is probable to have a Full Turnkey PCB containing one or more layers. These layers are built up within the HDI layers.

The ink is placed onto the laminate by pushing it through the stencil. For curing of the ink, the board is placed inside a curing oven for baking.

Liquid Photo Imaging (LPI)

This method is applicable where the line width is larger than 4mm.

This process is quite similar to the process of applying solder mask on a PCB.

In this method, the laminate is with a liquid photo-imageable epoxy and exposed to Ultra Violet Light.

The board is then developed and cured after that. This method is more precise compared to Manual screen printing.

Direct Legend Printing

DLP is considered the most precise silkscreen application method in as much as it is more expensive.

In this application, an acrylic ink is used on an inkjet projector to apply it directly on the Full Turnkey PCB using data from Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Ultra Violet light is used to cure the ink while it is being printed. It is worth noting that PCBs with silver finishes have the disadvantage of acrylic ink not curing.
