What Are The Benefits Of Turnkey PCBs?

The most important benefits of full turnkey PCB are:

Cost Reduction

With the existence of a Full Turnkey PCB manufacturing contract, the client incurs no extra charges delivering freight to the manufacturer. This saves money.

The outsourced company also has ambient working relationships with component manufacturers.

This means that they can get parts and components at cheaper prices compared to the client sourcing for the parts.

Issue Identification

One major benefit that is both time and money saving is the ability to identify probable manufacturing problems before the Full Turnkey PCB makes it to production.

Before handing over, the manufacturer will confirm that the specifications are same as the ones provided by the client.

In case an error is identified, the design can be corrected or modified thus avoiding being stuck with inefficient Full Turnkey PCBs.

Dealing With One Company

The manufacturing process is streamlined because only a single company handles the whole manufacturing process.

This means that scheduling multiple points of contact is eliminated.

Better Quality Control

Having just one company completely focusing on the management of the Full Turnkey PCB project enhances oversight.

This also improves the product quality.

How Does Full Turnkey Manufacturing Compare To Consignment Manufacturing?

Full Turnkey PCB manufacturing permits the outsourcing of labor to a company that has the ability to manufacture it.

It can either be a small or large manufacturing company.

They usually handle manufacturing of the Full Turnkey PCB and based on the agreement may proceed with its assembly, acquire components, test the product and do the after sale services.

The company has total control over the entire manufacturing process thus a demerit to the client.

Consignment Manufacturing is a process whereby the client maintains total control of the manufacturing process.

The materials purchased, and the maintenance inventory remain with the client and developer of the Full Turnkey PCB.

All the materials, and their sorting can be monitored by the client before the PCB is forwarded for production and eventual final assembly.

This method ensures total control over ensuring the board materials are correctly ordered and everything checks out before manufacturing.

High Performance FR4

High Tg Epoxy

This laminate is highly recommended for multilayer Full Turnkey PCBs. Tg can be compared to the melting point and it is the vitrification temperature.

An increase in the Tg number leads to an increase in the PCBs rigidity.

Tg levels of around 1700°C guarantee an exceptional resistance to chemicals with a very good stability.

BT Epoxy

Recommended for Full Turnkey PCBs that are free from Lead. They are famous for containing exceptional characteristics and properties like electrical, mechanical and thermal.

Mostly applicable in Multilayered Full Turnkey PCBs. At extreme temperatures, they exhibit a very high bond strength.

Polyimide has exceptional environmental stability. It is highly recommended for Full Turnkey PCBs that have multilayers with very high densities.

It also contains possesses strong mechanical, thermal and mechanical properties.

Copper Clad (CCL)

This laminate is composed of a glass fiber or reinforcing material made of wood pulp.

This laminate is mostly used in Full Turnkey PCBs in contained in high voltage circuits.

What Are The Plating Finishes Applied To Full Turnkey PCBs?

Some of the most common PCB surface finish are:

  • Organic Solderability Preservative (OSP)
  • Hot Air Solder Leveling (HASL)
  • Electroless-Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG)
  • Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium and Immersion Gold (ENEPIG)
  • Nickel Gold Plating
  • Immersion Silver and Immersion Tin (ImAg and ImSn)

What Requirements Does Full Turnkey PCB Have To Meet Before Applying HASL Surface Finish?

Hot Air Solder Leveling (HASL) is the process of dipping the Full Trunkey PCB inside a solder bath that is melted.

The PCB has to have these requirements:

  1. The solder coating has to be defect free with a smooth surface. Bubbles should not affect the solder mask in any way. The PCB should have a surface free from foreign particles.
  2. A range of 3µm to 8µm should be maintained as the tin layer soldering thickness
  3. Solderability should be maintained by eliminating lead.

What Are The Electrical Methods Used To Test Full Turnkey PCB?

Some of the main testing techniques include:

X-ray Inspection

This inspection is also known as the AXI. It is more of an inspection tool for most Contract Manufacturers.

An X-ray technician is able to detect flaws promptly during this test by viewing the barrels, internal traces and the PCBs solder connections.

Elements that are normally concealed from sight can easily be checked by X-ray testing.

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)

Photos of the PCB are taken either by a two 3D cameras or a single 2D camera. A comparison is then made between the PCBs detailed schematics and its photos from the cameras.

If a schematic doesn’t match the boards photos to a certain degree, then an inspection technician flags the board.

Issues can be detected in advance using AOI to ensure immediate shutdown of production.

However, the board is not powered by the AOI and does not have total coverage of all the part types.

In-circuit Testing / Bed-of-nails Test

This is the most vigorous PCB testing type present. It is very expensive but the cost depends on fixture size, the board among other factors.

The individual board circuitry is powered and actuated by the ICT. This test is usually 85-90% human error-free.

Burn-in Testing

This is a very extreme testing type for PCBs. Its purpose is to notice initial failures and find the load capacity.

The strength of burn-in testing normally destroys the parts being tested on the PCB.

This type of test usually shortens the PCBs lifespan especially if the boards rated stress is exceeded.

The testing limit is reduced if a few or no failures are found after a brief period of time to evade over-stressing of the PCB.

Flying Probe Test

This test option is less expensive compared to in-circuit testing.

This test is non-powered and checks for diode issues, opens in the PCB circuit, capacitance, shorts, inductances and resistance.

This test uses a probe with needles attached to it on an x-y grid gotten from Computer Aided Design.

The contract manufacturer has programs that synchronize to equal the PCB for the program to run.

Flying Probe Test

Flying Probe Test

Functional Testing

Some customers have a preference of the old-functional test.

The Contract Manufacturer utilizes this to confirm that the PCB will power up.

Requirements for this test include;

  • External equipment pieces
  • Requirements for industry standards
  • Fixtures

The customer normally provides the functional test and any other parameters used.

Some Contract Manufacturers can assist in developing and designing this kind of test.

This may not be a preferred choice if the PCB product needs to get out of the manufacturer quickly because it takes a lot of time.

But for purposes of longevity and quality, this test saves money and saves the company’s face

What Are The Advanced Capabilities Of High Density Interconnection On Full Turnkey PCB?

When manufacturing, it is probable to have a Full Turnkey PCB containing one or more layers. These layers are built up within the HDI layers.

Microvias can also be included on the different layers.

Depending on the requirements, the designer can decide to stack or stagger the Microvias.

For increased routing density, challenging designs have Microvias stacked and copper filled.

When all layers are fabricated with HDI technology, they can interconnect via the vias which are stack filled.

Devices using large pin-count with complex PCBs, HDI is the most reliable solution for interconnection.

What Happens To Full Turnkey PCBs With Via-in-pad Features During Manufacture?

In the event that a Full Turnkey PCB has via-in-pad features, it undergoes a via-filling process to make sure it has good solderability.

This is the recommended fabrication process.

During fabrication, it should be mentioned beforehand if the design has a via-in-pad feature.

This is in order to adjust the lead time and price.

What Are The Methods Of Applying Silkscreen On A Full Turnkey PCB?

Fig 7 - Application Of Silk Screen

Application Of Silk Screen

Addition of silkscreen layer on the Full Turnkey PCB is the last fabrication step.

This is a layer that identifies the components of a Full Turnkey PCB, marks and logos, test points and parts using ink traces.

Silkscreen is generally applied on the side of the Full Turnkey PCB where components are placed.

Special cases are there where the solder side of the PCB may also have silkscreen but at an extra cost.

It assists the manufacturer and the component placement engineer to identify the location of all the components.

The three common ways of applying silkscreen on the Full Turnkey PCB are:

Manual Screen Printing

This method is applied in cases where the line width is greater than 7mm (0.007”) with a registration tolerance of 5mm.

A stencil with the texts is required for this process and nylon traces made.

The ink is placed onto the laminate by pushing it through the stencil. For curing of the ink, the board is placed inside a curing oven for baking.

Liquid Photo Imaging (LPI)

This method is applicable where the line width is larger than 4mm.

This process is quite similar to the process of applying solder mask on a PCB.

In this method, the laminate is with a liquid photo-imageable epoxy and exposed to Ultra Violet Light.

The board is then developed and cured after that. This method is more precise compared to Manual screen printing.

Direct Legend Printing

DLP is considered the most precise silkscreen application method in as much as it is more expensive.

In this application, an acrylic ink is used on an inkjet projector to apply it directly on the Full Turnkey PCB using data from Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Ultra Violet light is used to cure the ink while it is being printed. It is worth noting that PCBs with silver finishes have the disadvantage of acrylic ink not curing.

What Happens When Silkscreen Designators Get Too Crowded For The Full Turnkey PCB?

In the event that the Full Turnkey PCB Board has silkscreen designators fully crowded, then the remaining designator scan be encompassed in the design drawing.

If need be, the assembly designers will simply countercheck with the drawing.

What Are The Details Included In Gerber Format Fabrication Drawing When Ordering For Full Turnkey PCB?

  • Full Turnkey PCB Requirement notes
  • An outline of the Full Turnkey PCB Board that has its dimensions, radii and scores
  • Material requirements for board fabrication
  • Tolerance and board Thickness of the Full Turnkey PCB
  • Order for Layer Stuck up

What Are The Causes Of Cancelling Or Holding Full Turnkey PCB Order?

  • Corrupted files or missing files from the Gerber Package
  • Board outline has not been specified.
  • Garber and Fabrication print do not match
  • Drill file is not available
  • Drill file has not been submitted in ASSCII Format
  • There is no clear definition of Plated and Non-Plated Holes
  • If the Aperture list is missing
  • Plane layers lacking on thermal connections

What Is The Importance Of Laminating Full Turnkey PCB?

The main reason of laminating a Full Turnkey PCB is that the laminates form the boards foundation.

This is in addition to allocating a series of variables such as the weight of copper and its width, silk screen and solder mask.

Different fabricators make use of a variety of laminate depending on the applications. This requires informed choice if laminate because the choice is very crucial in fabrication.

Such laminates can be manufactured using various materials in very thin layers like fiberglass or resin to enhance their bonds.

This means that during laminate fabrication, their thickness can be regulated by be increasing or decreasing the number of layers.

Full Turnkey boards that utilize a few number of layers tend to be less rigid. This exposes them to flexing with broken traces.

Selecting the right laminate ensures that parameters such as losses, stability and the performance of the Full Turnkey PCB are well catered for.

The factors that determine the choice of laminate based on environmental conditions are:

  • Dielectric Constant (Dk)
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE)
  • Glass Transition Temperature (Tg)

Which Files Do You Need To Order Full Turnkey PCB?

Some of the files you can send include:

  • BOM file
  • XY Data and Assembly drawing
  • Gerber Files
  • Fabrication Drawing in Gerber Format

Why Should Plane Layers Of Full Turnkey PCB Be Supplied In Negative Format?

  • Positive layers tend to offer extended test times hence ensuring efficiency in the final test.
  • Compared to positive files, the file size for negative layers have a very small file size.
  • When an Engineering analysis is carried out on the negative layers, they are response is much quicker.
